Shards O Glass Commercial

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbQ4JNpXPTY

Using a Super Bowl commercial as well, I chose the "Shards O Glass" commercial. This commercial, produced by truth.com, makes fun at big tobacco companies by saying that they too can sell a product that doesn't make sense. People see freeze pops as harmless food, but this company puts glass in them that obviously harms people, just like the tobacco in cigarettes. As stupid as Shards O Glass is, what the tobacco companies are doing is exactly the same. They market their product to be fun and harmless yet millions of people die from the toxins inside. The spokesman of the commercial addresses the main problems of Shards O Glass freeze pops by saying there is no safe way to consume them and that they are for adults only. But what is ironic is that in the commercial it shows hundreds of freeze pops still being made and they will obviously appeal to young people because freeze pops are not usually a adult only food. Do you think that this parody of a tobacco company is accurate? For something as unrealistic as Shards O Glass freeze pops, do they make you think of cigarettes and how dangerous they can be? Does this commercial make you think differently about how tobacco advertising works? Or do you just disregard this commercial because it doesn't stand out as much as their other commercials (such as the one we watched in class with the mannequins)?

The Shard O Glass Commercial produced by truth.com makes an impact on viewers. The video uses humor and symbolism as rhetorical devices to make the argument that smoking is dangerous as it is equivalent to eating shards of glass. This video seems humorous and unrealistic because no company would be able to sell popsicles containing shards of glass. However, cigarette companies continue to thrive by selling products that kill their customers. Therefore, the Shards O Glass Popsicles represent cigarettes. The shards of glass within the popsicles are symbolic of the nicotine and toxic chemicals found in cigarettes. It is clear that eating shards of glass or inhaling toxic chemicals will ultimately lead to death. Thus eating shards of glass is equivalent to smoking cigarettes. As shown by the humorous tone of the commercial, eating shards of glass or smoking cigarettes seem to differ in the perceived level of importance and severity. Through portraying the reality of cigarette companies selling death in a stick to their customers through a more light-hearted humorous viewpoint, the commercial makes viewers question the difference between eating Shards O Glass Popsicles and smoking. The commercial intends to make a lasting impression on viewers so smokers may realize the serious consequences of smoking and decide to quit.

    1. I agree that this commercial can have a huge impact on viewers. Instead of commercials just saying to quit smoking because it is bad this one relates cigarettes to a product that is equal is health risks. I think this has some shock effect to it because people don't think about cigarettes killing them but when they see the shards of glass in the freeze pop they are always reminded that if they ate that it would ultimately lead to death. By relating the shardsoglass freeze pops and cigarettes, truth.com makes people realize what they are actually doing to themselves. They can no longer ignore what they are doing to their body. I think this a great commercial because it gets the message out about quitting smoking in a whole new way and whether smokers want to think about it or not this commercial sticks with them and it will be a constant reminder to them every time they go out to smoke.

I think that this commercial can have a huge impact on the viewers. The commercial is so ironic because a sane person would not eat something that could damage them like shards of glass. So, it wouldn't make sense to use something like tobacco which is pretty much saying please kill me. This has a great impact on smokers because hopefully they can realize the harm that the they are causing to themselves through tobacco.

    1. Yes, I agree with you. This advertisement is so ironic that can make smokers realize the harm of smoking clearly. I think using the popsicles filled with shards of broken glass is much better than just showing those terrible images and empty talk.

I think this commercial puts smoking in a different light that most people don't look at or see. Everyone knows smoking kills, but no one necessarily realizes how stupid it is. This commercial makes cigarette users look dumb because they are doing something as ridiculous as eating a glass covered popsicle. A glass covered popsicle is blatantly dangerous and will kill you just like smoking. This is an exaggeration, but it holds a great amount of truth. I think this does have a good effect on viewers because maybe they will have a revelation and every time they go to smoke they will see a glass covered popsicle.

This advertisement uses a very innovative way to tell people explicitly how smoking will bring harm to your health and how stupid smoking is. This advertisement is completely different with other anti-smoking advertisements. The most anti-smoking advertisement just uses the terrible scene to terrify viewers.

In the most situations, even though people know the harm of smoking, they are still smoking. However, will they eat the popsicles filled with shards of broken glass? Because the shards and broken glass will bring serious harm to health, people will definitely say no. This advertisement uses an analogy way to show viewers that actually smoking is the same as eating a popsicles filled with shards of broken glass. There is lots of toxicant in cigarette, just like the shards of broken glass in popsicles. Everyone knows eating popsicles filled with shards of broken glass is ridiculous and stupid. The clip wants to make audience clear about smoking is actually the same thing. There are not remarkable differences between them. I believe most smokers after watching this advertisement will rethink how stupid it is to smoke instead of ignoring it just like the other anti-smoking advertisements.

  5. I definitely agree with Hantao. This commercial is very different from many other anti-smoking commercials. The message in this video is an example of what really goes on in the tobacco industries. Smoking is just as harmful as eating a popsicle made from shards of glass. The effects don't come instantly like licking a glass filled popsicle, but they can be just as harmful. This exaggerated commercial just wants their viewers to see how dangerous smoking can actually be. "What if all companies sold products like tobacco"? What would we do? The company says that, "the only way to reduce health risks would be to not eat their glass pops". So should it be banned? Or should people continue to eat/ smoke/ drink what they desire even though they know how harmful it is to their lives?

  6. I agree with all of the above posts as the shards of glass pops are certainly a metaphor for cigarrettes. One thing that struck me, is the point to say "These are for adults only." This interested me as freeze pops are usually a juvenile food. I think this is a rhetorical technique to draw attention to the fact that cigarrettes, a perhaps even more perilous product than shards o glass pops, are only for adults. Why are they even for adults? When you turn 18, are your lungs suddenly invincible to tar? Medical professionals have confirmed this is not the case. So, with the satirical statement that shards o glass pops are "only for adults", this commercial attacks tobacco companies for failing to account for the safety of everyone, not just children.

  7. This commercial takes a very exaggerated stand point to get the message of how harmful cigarettes are to the people who smoke them. In a way it compares to some advertisement ads, where in the end someone speaks really fast and tells the audience of the dangers of smoking. In this, they speak of the dangers of it, except in an optimistic way, making it seem like nothing is wrong with having pieces of glass in your Popsicle, which, obviously, it is very dangerous. They make the commercial over exaggerated to a point where the audience thinks it silly. Making it sound silly may play in to the idea that it is "silly" to smoke when it is a danger to you.

Most of the disagreements in the comments on this video reflect what everyone else has been posting. Those who are against this commercial have frequently touched on the fact that this is an over-exaggeration of the intent of drug companies. I feel as though the stance that many anti-drug commercials who use scare tactics is sometimes too drastic. That being said, the commercial definitely succeeds in comparing something that is obviously harmful in a candy to cigarettes. The comparison is well thought out and effective. Those who are in support of this commercial agree with this approach towards the anti-cigarette campaign.

This post seems to challenge people's ideas of common knowledge. With the Shard O' Glass freeze pop, it is obvious that they are not health or even safe and they compare this to smoking. People are told that it is not healthy and it is not safe but people still smoke. The commerical just makes you think about how people can see that this is obivously wrong but smoking is not.
