Sex and Alcohol
Alcohol ads almost never fail to have some kind of sexual thought portrayed in them. Most have a much stronger appeal to men than women, since you only relatively see a very attractive woman hanging all over a guy with a beer in his hand. In this ad however, you see the opposite, where it is instead meant for a female audience. Why is it that alcohol almost always come across as sexually related? Is that the main attraction, the hope of "getting it in" with a stranger? More than 50% of all sexual assaults happen while under the influence of alcohol. Why is it that alcohol company's put such a positive note on the connection between sex and alcohol?

I would totally agree with you that most alcohol advertisements are very sexualized, and they are normally geared to a guys interests. However, I do not know if I would consider this advertisement to be intended for a female audience. They do seem to hint at "getting it in", but I dont feel like this would be of interest to a woman viewer. Unfortunately, like you mentioned, alcohol companies do seem to put a positive between sex and alcohol. Alcohol companies are not the only ones who use this marketing strategy to help sell their product, which is why we common say "sex sells". Why does "sex sell"?
ReplyDeleteI also agree that nearly all of the advertisements I see about alcohol include some amount of sexuality. This may be the first alcohol add I've ever seen that could be directed at women. However, like Sean said, it may not be in the interest of most of the female audience but there are always exceptions. Also, "getting it in" with a stranger after a night of drinking might not be the main attraction/goal for everyone, but it alcohol can definitely increase the desire for something like that to happen, which is a reason why alcohol is regularly paired with sex in advertisements. Alcohol distributors know that sexuality in ads will make the ad more successful.
ReplyDeleteAlcohol companies advertise the correlation between sex and alcohol because it helps sell their products. The goal of every single company is to make as much money as possible. They are going to do whatever it takes to sell their product and market it in a way that makes it enticing to their customers. The companies do not want anybody to know anything negative that could happen if you use their product, they just want you to buy buy buy.
ReplyDeleteI am not really sure what to think about this ad. I agree that it is aimed at women, but I am not sure how the company is trying to attract women to their product. The ad itself is not very appealing to look at, and although I am male, I wouldn't think many women would be attracted towards this. I know that "sex sells," but I am failing to see how this add will make someone think, "I could really go for a Felona light right now."
ReplyDeleteThe stereotype behind most of these advertisements portrays men as regular beer drinkers, more so than women, which is not true as well. Additionally, when you see these advertisements and commercials, you never fail to find a good-looking woman with a guy drinking the aforementioned beer in the ad. The relationship between sex and alcohol is marketed here by the thought that if the company did not hook the viewer on the alcohol end of the ad, then it will certainly hook the viewer and grasp their attention when anything sexual is associated. What do these marketers and ad companies plan to portray when they sit down together and collaborate ideas for marketing their product? What light do they intend to put their product in?
ReplyDeleteI feel as if this ad challenges our views on sex and alcohol. People who are very conservative might not like what this image is suggesting. This image is very controversial and could spark interesting views. This image definitely has an effect on people values of sex and alcohol. Is having fun with alcohol worth challenging people's views on sex. I believe that if alcohol is such a promoter in sex, why even use it if you do not believe in sex. This ad makes me think of how people handle their alcohol. They are suggesting that alcohol can cause you to have sex. I believe that it is more on how you handle yourself under the influence rather than the alcohol itself working its "magic" to get you a girl or a boy. Why must alcohol be the one to attract you to the opposite sex? Why can't it just be the person you are that attracts the opposite sex?
ReplyDeleteI agree that it should just be the person that attracts the opposite sex and I think that's an interesting point because the caption, "unwind..." gave me a completely different outlook on this. I don't see it as much as trying to appeal to women but to men. I took it as trying to almost invite the men to relax and let loose maybe after a long day. I also think that in a way it is enticing the person to relax, have a beer, and let them open up. Which goes with the idea that it can just be the person that attracts the opposite sex but maybe they need a little bit of alcohol in them to help them relax and be themselves.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is unnecessary for companies to bring a sexual aspect into ads, not just alcohol ads alone, but any advertisement in general. It's sad to think that sex sells so well in our society. I agree with the approach going more towards men for this ad instead of women. I can definitely see how it could be leaning towards the whole idea of "unwinding" with a beer. There is still the underlying sexuality that this ad portrays, though.
